Employee Spotlight: Justin Custer

At eCore Software Inc., our employees work day in and out to ensure a successful customer experience. We want to share with you the background of our employees so that you can get to know our team a little better than before!

Education and Experience Background

My name is Justin Custer, and I have been a software engineer for the better part of 12 years now; 6 at eCore Software.

I grew up in Rule, Texas (population 800) and graduated from Rule High School in 1999; salutatorian in a class of 16 people. I also participated (and did extremely well) in numerous University Interscholastic League competitions, ranging from math, spelling, computer science, impromptu speaking, and pretty much whatever was needed at the time.

I started at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas (home of such distinguished alumni as Doyle Brunson, Stedman Graham, and Steven Turner) in 1999. During my time at Hardin-Simmons University, I was named freshman math student of the year in 1999 and computer science student of the year in 2003. I graduated from Hardin-Simmons University right at the end of the .com boom, which resulted in my not finding my first software job until 2005. My initial role involved writing firmware for radiation detectors for a company called Ludlum Measurements in Sweetwater, Texas.

eCore Software Role

I actually came to eCore Software 6 years ago today. I was made aware of a software engineer position at eCore Software through a mutual college friend of mine. At 30 years of age, I decided it was a time for a change (to quote the great Mick Jagger), so I interviewed, got the job, packed everything up, and moved to Dallas, all within a month. It has been all uphill ever since!

eCore Software has provided an environment where all employees are allowed the freedom to contribute to a noble cause, which is helping the heroes of the EMT profession become better organized and more efficient through our EMS scheduling software! I have long felt (as do the rest of our employees) that working at eCore Software is not just another job; but also a second family. Through this “family” dynamic, I have been able to grow, not only as a software engineer, but also, as a human being.

Hobbies/Personal Background

Outside of work, I am also an avid poker player, with over $130k in career tournament earnings. I was also fortunate enough to meet my wife, Kelly, and we were married on May 21st, 2016. I am also a proud owner of two rescue dogs and a step-owner of a rescue cat.
